If you’re interested, the Hafu history actually goes back to the 1930s in print and the term was used to distinguish between those marketed in the entertainment and porn industry opposed to Konketsuji who were being murdered, sent to orphanages or abroad, and generally stigmatized from before and after war. Up to the 1970s, Japanese dictionaries defined “Hafu” to be “A female konketsuji”.
So the impact of the commercialization, exotifixation and sexualization of Hafu comes from this age, especially in the advent of the late 1960s singing act “Golden Hafu”. In fact there were already “too many Hafu in the industry, they are disposable like tissue” according to a magazine interview of an exec in the 1970s, so not only a recent phenomenon.

Yes it is indeed interesting. I do know it is not that recent only some aspects of it, such as the plastic surgery transformation part. I know of the obsession going back a longer time also much present in manga literature. Thank you for your comment btw
